Sony PCM-D1

Sony PCM-D1

Man does this recorder look cool? I would have killed for one of these 10 years ago.

It’s a portable digital recorder, capable of 24/96Khz sampling rate recording. It records wave files into 4 gig internal memory or onto memory sticks. It has analog VU meters, runs on four AA batteries and is made out of Titanium.

The only drawback is the $2,000.00 price tag. But for a “pro” $2,000.00 is par for the course on a unit like this.

You mean I can talk to a…..human?

September 10th, 2005

“Sennheiser Electronics Corporation introduced a new applications hotline service as the first point of contact for end-users, dealers, reps or internal staff seeking product support, application assistance or technical advice.

Sennheiser’s audio expert, Scott Houston, is the go-to person at the newly created applications hotline. He can be reached by calling (877) 736-6434 extension 182 or e-mailing him directly, at shouston@sennheiserusa.com. Should any of the inquiries need further clarification or sales support, Scott will forward the question to the appropriate product manager or sales associate.”

You mean I can talk to a human? Wow. What a concept in customer service! Perhaps other companies might adopt this policy?

Make Donkey Kong sounds with your Space Axe

September 7th, 2005

Space Axe: Theremin like guitar with the same sound chip used in Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Pong, and Asteroids.

“It produces those awesome sounds of the UFO and the approaching aliens as well as other synth sounds . . . It also has a new type of fretboard that contains metal sensors arranged like the frets on a guitar.”

Sounds cool to me.

Lunar Module: Light theremin and FX box

September 7th, 2005

The Lunar Module from ElectroKraft

  • The “port holes” light up brilliant blue and react to the controls.
  • The lenses contain photocells which react to light and shadow like a “light Theremin”.
  • The push button switches on the bottom will turn on or off any of the 4 controls for combination effects.
  • There is a momentary push button on the side of the unit that will send an “all sounds off” midi message.

midigun: a rapper’s gun shaped instrument

August 28th, 2005

Good God. Now rappers have an “instrument” they can put in their hand like a gun so they can control scratching, lighting, midi sounds and more. This device can be “intuitively” used? So it’s intuitive for a rapper to be holding a gun shaped device? No wonder I’m sick of this business.

midiGun 1.0

“The ‘midiGun’ is a novel handheld midi controller. This gunshaped interface was especially designed to remotely control realtime music softwares like Ableton LIVE, Traktor DJ or others.

The ‘midiGun’ replaces the classical DJ mixer and the keyboard at the same time. The ‘midiGun’ is a new kind of device that can be intuitively used because of its handy shape and easy accessible knobs, buttons and sensors.”

Apple releases multi button mouse 21 years late

August 5th, 2005

Apple came out with the Mac in 1984. It’s now 2005 and they’re releasing their first mouse with more than one button: The Mighty Mouse

Way to go Apple. You guys are freaking pioneers, really.

And in true Apple fashion they’ve priced it right in line with all the other mice out there at $49.00. Ok, I’m an Apple freak. But come on Apple, why would I pay $49 for an Apple mouse when I can pay $5-10 for the equivalent from some other company?

More analog techniques & secrets

August 4th, 2005

The vast amount of knowledge I have in analog recording technology is immeasurable. I’ve decided to open up my brain vault of information and techniques just this once to show you some of the amazing skills and knowledge I have in the analog world.

This image shows what is called the “put the screwdriver under the pinch-roller pin and pry it up so it pushes against the capstan hard enough to make the tape travel moderately at the correct speed” technique.

Only here can you get such precious and valuable information about the dying world of analog technology.

New macs may be coming out next week!

July 25th, 2005

CNN has a story about some new mac minis and other gear supposedly coming out next week.

Another interesting point of note was that Apple’s sales were at 3.5 Billion (with a “B”) last quarter, up 75%. 75 freaking percent. Apple is learning something with the ipod and mini macs. This is good.
