October 31st, 2005

David Draiman (Disturbed) has a great music business quote which I saw on the “on demand” section of music choice. I just about rolled out of my chair laughing. This dude is absolutely brilliant.

If you could have sex once before you die, who would it be with?

October 21st, 2005

Hmm. Tough question. The one last time you have sex before you die. Who would you do for one last fling? Would it be Wilbur?

Mellotron 2005

October 17th, 2005

Remember the Mellotron? It was keyboard built in the 60’s which played tape loops of samples like strings, voices etc. The machine would roll a tape loop and vary the speed of the tape depending on the pitch of the key played. They sounded very cool on old Beatles and Genesis albums.

Here’s a modern day version of the Mellotron. All those tiny little black items are individual walkmans. Very cool.

Here’s the guy’s site: http://mysterycircuits.com/melloman/melloman.html

Pro Sound Blog forum resurrection? Yes or no?

October 12th, 2005

As you may know our forums were hacked. The blog section here has been the main focus of this site, and the forum a distant second.

With some work the forum can be brought back from the dead but is it worth it? I’ll only bring it back if we can get more action there!

Your opinion counts.

Aaton Cantar-X

October 12th, 2005

Good grief what the hell is this thing? I thought that Sony in the last post was cool but this Aaton Cantar-X rocks! 8 simultaneous channels of recording onto an internal 127 gig 2.5″ hard drive or flash memory. It has tons of controls including having actual faders for those touchy feely type engineers. Up to 96Khz sampling and built in CDR burner? Wow. There’s no price on their site…that means it is sssspendy.

How about the cool bluetooth remote? Awesome.

Sony PCM-D1

October 12th, 2005

Sony PCM-D1

Man does this recorder look cool? I would have killed for one of these 10 years ago.

It’s a portable digital recorder, capable of 24/96Khz sampling rate recording. It records wave files into 4 gig internal memory or onto memory sticks. It has analog VU meters, runs on four AA batteries and is made out of Titanium.

The only drawback is the $2,000.00 price tag. But for a “pro” $2,000.00 is par for the course on a unit like this.

Do you Didjeridoo?

October 7th, 2005

I did a today gig for a long time client and buddy named Marko Johnson. Marko is one unique cat. He’s a didjeridoo maker, player and teacher.

What is a didjeridoo? “The didgeridoo (or didjeridu) is a unique wind instrument of the Australian Aborigines of northern Australia. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or “drone pipe”. Musicologists classify it as an aerophone” (google). It is said to be the world’s oldest wind instrument. It is hollowed out piece of wood and you blow into it like a tuba player would. There is a special technique the player uses called “circular breathing.” The player fills his mouth up with air and blows in the “didji” while breathing in air through his nose. By doing this he is able to blow constantly through his didji without a pause in the sound. Marko can play his didji literally for hours without a pause in the sound if he wants.

The main blowing creates a drone tone, and the player also can create some interesting overtones by changing his jaw and lips.

Marko’s house isn’t much of house at all. There’s no furniture that I could see. But there’s plenty of didjis and hand made musical instruments all over the place. Musicians apparently converge there all the time to jam.

Marko’s didjis that he makes and sells at www.rounddoor.com are all over his house. He makes some amazingly beautiful pieces of art that are also musical instruments.

Marko has also invented some very cool mini didjis. They are called didjboxes. Check them out on his site www.didjbox.com.
