It's working now, but it is very buggy. I send emails and sometimes they won't go and sometimes they do. Comcast's software brought one of my macs to its knees. It is a hidden file that runs on bootup so I have to figure out how to get rid of it.

They also tried to "sell" me individual IP addresses for all my computers. What they neglected to tell me is that all I needed to do to get multiple machines working was use a router and not a hub. They'd rather sell me IP addresses...

Oh, another caveat, with regards to Comcast of Utah cable internet service: for some reason (usually for customers with the lowest level of service), they are sometimes using really cheap-ass cable modems, which even their tech people know is crap. These modems (can't remember the brand & model off-hand; I can find out if you like) get flaky a short while after installation, and aren't able to hold on to the "handshake" for more than a few minutes at a time. If you have a computer connected directly to the cable modem, it will see the network, then say it has been disconnected, then see the network again - repeating the cycle over and over.

Sadly, this is completely in line with my sister's experience with Comcast in Utah.

On the other hand, our experience with Comcast in New Mexico has been much more positive. It seems that the piecemeal manner in which Comcast (and most of its competitors) have built their networks has resulted in piecemeal service, as well.

If it's any consolation, once all the installation & configuration issues are dealt with, things get much easier. I do a lot of my work (with US and international clients) from my parents' house in SLC, when I am in town for music reasons; their Comcast connection has been as reliable (i.e. very), and with similar performance (i.e. very good), as our Comcast connection in Albuquerque.

For decades, we've been told that if you pay more, you're a sucker. Price trumps value. Service is very low on the priority list of those who provide us with life's technological necessities.
